Augustine of Hippo (354-430) is the most influential figure in the Western Church after St. Paul and Jesus himself, and certainly one of the most important intellectual figures in world history. He was the author of more than a hundred major works, including Confessions and The City of God, and of hundreds of letters and sermons that have survived the centuries. This introduction will give a brief summary of Augustine’s contributions and will make some suggestions for further reading.
